About the Director of Music Ministries role: 

The Director of Music Ministries at Our Mother of Sorrows will be a passionate person who has a heart of worship and a desire to lead the Music Ministry as it continues to grow and expand in all dimensions.

The ideal person will be gifted with a dynamic and versatile musical talent as well as an enthusiasm to enhance the prayerfulness of this faith community with vibrant and engaging music. He or she will be a faith-filled leader as we “make a joyful noise unto the Lord!”

The Director of Music Ministries will: 

  • Develop vision and plan for growth of the Music Ministry
  • Provide oversight of all aspects of the Music Ministry
  • Provide accompaniment for weekend Masses
  • Direct, rehearse, and manage the choir
  • Collaborate with the contemporary praise band
  • Oversee scheduling and ongoing training of cantors
  • Coordinate music selections with liturgy and message
  • Coordinate and/or lead worship as necessary
  • Assist in addressing sound system needs
  • Be available to play weddings and funerals if needed
  • Collaborate with staff on special projects as needed

What you bring: 

Education

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree – a concentration in music or a similar field is a great bonus but not a requirement.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have two years or more of ministry experience or music leadership experience. He will also be proficient on the piano and keys.  Experience playing the guitar and/or organ are preferred, but not a requirement.

  • Show a willingness and ability to support and engage in the faith community and the congregation, especially in music style. At the same time, the ideal candidate will be influential and encouraging in expanding the musical horizons of the congregation.
  • Be knowledgeable about a variety of musical styles, and have the ability to teach these varying styles to music groups and ministries.
  • Be an effective interpersonal communicator and highly skilled in speaking, teaching, and writing.
  • Possess the ability to cast vision and strategically move the Music Ministry in new directions and to higher levels of excellence.
  • Show strong and graceful leadership with the church and congregation through change, and be an advocate for the church and the Music Ministry when changes are necessary, even amidst pushback.
  • Possess a high level of technical talent.

General Purpose:

The Director of Music Ministries, under the direction of the pastor and in collaboration with the pastoral staff, organizes and directs the program of sacred music for the liturgical and devotional life of the parish in order to facilitate the full and active participation of the assembly through education, preparation, celebration and evaluation, fostering a spirit of unity, ministry and stewardship among the music ministers and the assembly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Acts as primary keyboard accompanist for all parish liturgies; Develops assembly repertoire, weekly music selections and appropriate music for all parish liturgies; Recruits, trains and schedules choirs, ensembles, cantors, instrumentalists and accompanists to lead and support assembly singing; Ensures appropriate musical support for funeral and wedding liturgies; Attends relevant scheduled meetings (e.g. Parish Staff, Liturgy Committee and Diocesan Music/Liturgy Director meetings); Sees to the Safety Environment process for all adults in the music ministry; Prepares and administers the music budget; Ensures compliance with all applicable copyright and licensing laws; Oversees maintenance of musical instruments, equipment and printed music; Keeps inventory; Has a working knowledge of parish sound systems; and, Is responsible for own self-care, professional liturgical music education and spiritual formation.

Please note: For wedding and funeral liturgies, the Director of Music Ministries may enter into a separate contract with families and/or couples to provide accompaniment or choral support for their event; compensation will not be made by the parish. If a wedding or funeral occurs during regular office hours, those hours must be made up during that same week.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Music (e.g. Keyboard, Voice, Conducting, Music Education) from an accredited college or university;

Experience: High level of experience in playing the organ and/or piano, preferably both. Experience in a Catholic parish music ministry program. Knowledge of Catholic liturgical music as presented in church documents and practice.

Other background demonstrating application of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Have the ability to conduct choirs/ensembles, coach vocal technique and direct cantors/accompanists/other instrumentalists;
  • Connect with and challenge people at all musical levels;
  • Have the ability to lead and supervise;
  • Have excellent interpersonal and human relations skills;
  • Have excellent organizational skills;
  • Have the ability to work independently;
  • Be a practicing Roman Catholic; and,
  • Be willing to commit to overall parish welfare and development
