Primary Function: The Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is charged with visioning, articulating and executing a creative, strategic ministry plan for the fostering of disciples around the diocese in collaboration with parishes, catholic schools and campus ministries. The Director articulates pathways for ministry that are goal oriented and authentically relational by refocusing attention away from programs and activities toward the primary purpose of effective ministry; an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ for each person.



Education, Training, Abilities and Experience:

  •  Master’s degree in theology or related area plus a minimum of five years’ experience in the field;
  • Must have held a youth, young adult or campus ministry leadership position for at least five years in a parish or diocese;
  • Must be a disciple of Jesus Christ who regularly seeks to enhance his or her relationship with God through the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church;
  • Must be passionate, energized and excited about ministering to the youth and young adults and empowering others to do the same;
  • Promotes and encourages intercultural and diverse ministry environments;
  • Must have good working knowledge of applicable Church documents on youth, young adult and Hispanic people. (Renewing the Vision: A framework for Youth Ministry, Catechesis Tradendae, Evangelii Nuntiandi, the General Catechetical Directory, the National Catechetical Directory and Sons and Daughters of Light, Encuentro & Mission: A Renewed Pastoral Framework for Hispanic Ministry);
  • Bilingual and Hispanic and other cultures such as Burmese and African ministry experience helpful;
  • Love of youth and understanding of the development stages of middle school, high school youth and young adults;
  • Excellent written, verbal and public speaking skills;
  • Working knowledge of information technology, including personal computers and Microsoft Office Software;
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to make decisions in a team environment;
  • Must be able to make presentations to youth, young adults and parents in a dynamic manner;
  • Collaborative leadership with other diocesan offices, decision-making and listening skills;
  • Planning and budgeting skills;
  • Must have the ability to complete multiple projects and tasks as required;
  • Ability to maintain confidential information;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license;
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends;
  • Must be able to successfully complete a criminal history and background check

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide intentional discipleship and formation opportunities for youth and young adults to foster the Gospel of Jesus Christ including but limited to, catechetical offerings, small Christian communities, social opportunities, service experiences and retreats.
  • Articulates a vision of ministry grounded in the four principles of pre-evangelization, evangelization, discipleship and mission.
  • Implementation of diocesan level opportunities and events for middle school, high school, college students and young adults.
  • Establish a youth and young adult advisory board consisting of coordinators of youth ministry and youth and young adult leaders from parishes.
  • With the assistance of the youth and young adult advisory board, oversee the planning and coordination of diocesan, regional, national events for youth and young adults.
  • Fosters collaborative, positive working relationships with parishes, Newman Centers, diocesan departments, diocesan staff, Gasper River Camp, Catholic Schools and FOCUS Teams.
  • Gather youth and young adult ministers with people in their ministry.
  • Provides training, support and resources and is a mentor to youth and young adult ministers, college campus ministers, Newman Center staff, Gasper Camp staff and youth and young adult ministry volunteers.
  • Is willing and able to travel to assist parishes in evaluating youth and young adult ministry programs, setting visions and implementing viable youth and young adult ministry according to the needs of each parish or Newman Center.
  • Provides on-going educational, spiritual and ministry formation along with consultation to support the comprehensive model of youth, young adult, and campus ministries in parishes and at Newman Centers.
  • Collaborate with other diocesan offices, parishes, catholic schools involved in catholic education formation and evangelization in the diocese.
  • Maintain close relationship and collaboration with all diocesan offices.
  • Work and strategize with rural parishes to help identify youth and young adult leaders to build youth and young adult programs.
  • Stay current in best ministry practices and emerging movements and talents across the country in youth and young adult ministry, both Catholic and other religious organizations.
  • All other duties as assigned.
