POSITION:       Director of Youth Ministry

RESPONSIBLE TO:       Pastor

STATUS:  Full-Time, Non-Exempt, 40 hours

The Director of Youth Ministry serves in a full time position with the essential task of assisting in the mission of the Church in the Diocese of Boise.  The area of responsibility is for young people in grade 6-grade 12, including sacramental preparation for Confirmation, in a holistic model of youth ministry. This program, which will reach out to all youth in the community, provides for formal catechesis, and leadership that enables youth to serve others. The program shall develop close communication with, and mutual support from, families of youth and collaborates with other parish and community youth organizations

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Religious Education or Theology or National Credential in Youth Ministry or background in theology and educational methodologies with a willingness to move toward credential or degree
  • Minimum of two years’ experience associated with Youth Ministry in a Catholic parish

Leadership Development, Fostering Discipleship and Evangelization

  • Work with the pastor, parents, and other parishioners to create and maintain a vibrant youth ministry team to carry out activities and learning.
  • Collaborate with the pastor in the training, assignment, and evaluation of the youth ministry team and small group leaders.
  • Regular and frequent communication with parents of students that will both keep them informed of youth ministry activities as well as provide assistance and support in the faith formation of their student(s).
  • Recruit, train and develop youth to assume leadership positions in the parish.

Program Development and Administration

  • Gather data to understand the interests, attitudes, beliefs, and formation gaps of the youth.
  • Assess data in light of the goals, components, and dimensions of youth ministry to foster lifelong, intentional discipleship of the teens in the heart of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Direct catechesis of parish youth according to the documents that guide Youth Ministry.
  • Work with the pastor and the youth ministry team, develop programming that will lead young people into a deeper relationship with Jesus, including but not limited to:
  • Weekly Nights
  • One weekend retreat
  • Participation in ICYC and other Diocesan and Deanery YM opportunities throughout the year
  • Service Projects
  • Plan events and activities specifically designed to invite new students—both inside and outside the parish—into the program.
  • Develop annual budget and track program expenses against that budget. Maintain necessary records including sacramental records.
  • Determine effective means for promoting and publicizing programs and activities.
  • Develop and foster a culture among the youth that is focused on evangelization, discipleship and service.
  • Provide opportunities for youth to hear and respond to the Gospel message. (Service opportunities, retreats, conferences, etc.)
  • Attend all parish staff meetings and submit required reports timely.
  • Evaluate all aspects of parish youth ministry program and set goals by working with the Pastor and the Youth Ministry team.
  • Work with pastor and youth ministry team to develop calendar of events for youth ministry program.

Serve as a Liaison

  • Keep the parish community informed of the Youth Ministry Program.
  • Work closely with Saint Mary’s School and the Coordinator of Children’s Ministry to ensure that catechesis is consistent with the direction of the whole parish..
  • Advise, communicate, coordinate, and cooperate with other Youth Ministers at both the deanery and diocesan level.
  • Stay informed of developments directed toward improving youth ministry such as attendance at diocesan, regional, and national conferences; regular reading and updating through current periodicals and websites; and membership in youth ministry associations.
  • Maintain an active presence in local schools and home school co-ops to evangelize, build relationships with youth, and encourage them in their faith.

Perform additional religious education and faith formation duties as assigned by pastor.
