JOB DESCRIPTION: PASTORAL ASSOCIATE

FOR ST. FRANCIS DE SALES, ST. DONATUS, & STS. PETER AND PAUL’S

The churches of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa are vibrant rural parishes of over 500 families. We are currently seeking a full-time Pastoral Associate. We have been clustered for many years are almost like one parish with three churches. This position is responsible for different components but primarily Director of Faith Formation and Youth Ministry, Hispanic-Migrant-Summer Ministry along with Administration responsibilities.

I.  Description of responsibilities and duties:

A) Serves as primary assistant to the pastor. This includes being able to assist, represent, implement and carry out the Pastor’s requests in regard to parish worship, programs, procedures and policies. Will also assist in the coordination of a wide range of parish activities and programs either already established or as they arise. This person performs duties rather independently with only general oversight from the Pastor. This includes providing multiple liaison functions within the parish community organizations, personnel and individual persons to support and work with those roles already established, not to replace them.  

1) (Primary) Director of Religious Education:

Responsible for implementing a comprehensive parish religious education program, including adult Christian formation. This includes supervising other Religious Education personnel and/or volunteers; managing religious education finances and budget; recruitment and training of volunteers; planning programs for adults, teens, children; summer programs, evaluating program curricula and acting as parish resource person in methods and areas of theology.  

2) (Primary) Youth Ministry Coordinator:

Responsible for a youth ministry program and close connection to the local high school’s calendar. The summer Steubenville Youth Conference had been most integral in the past. Programs have consisted of the following:  catechesis, evangelization, social action, community building, spirituality, liturgy, guidance, enablement and advocacy. May include recruiting, training and supervising volunteers.

3.) (Secondary) Administration: Collaborates in the overall process of parish administration, including needs assessment, pastoral planning, decision-making, implementation, financial management, building maintenance, etc. Work closely with parish bookkeeper.

4.) (Tertiary) Minister to Hispanic Migrant Farm Labor Camp: Contact person to assist them during the months of April thru November in their needs along with coordinating a greater connection to St Donatus Parish in Brooten. Bi-lingual skills are helpful but not necessary. This responsibility will not be a part of this position until 2019.  

II. Other Responsibilities:

Assist the Pastor as needed with necessary marriage, baptismal and funeral preparation. Attend Parish Council meetings in each parish in order to keep them abreast of what is going on in parish activities and programs. As necessary, attend the meetings of various other organizations within the parishes (i.e. Christian Mothers, Mission Groups, Catholic Aid, K of C. etc.) as well as attending various Diocesan meetings in order to represent the pastor and/or parishes in a specific regard.

Communication: It is important that the person in this role is able to communicate and have excellent interpersonal skills in order to relate to people of ages, cultures and status in life. Will keep the parish and faith community informed of overall activities in all areas of ministry. Keeps informed of and communicates diocesan events, policies and other programs as necessary. Is able to establish good rapport and communicate with all staff and volunteers.

The above duties and jobs are to be in keeping with the overall mission of the Church and/or at the request of the Pastor of the three parishes. In all these areas, the Pastor should be updated and informed on the progress and development of each of these programs at regular intervals.

Any differences or questions by individual parishioners and the Pastoral Associate should be brought to the attention of the Pastor. A policy of open support, communication and close cooperation should be maintained.

III. Requirements of position:

Master’s degree or Masters of Divinity in theology, religious education or other degree with lay ministry training is preferred. Degree in pastoral theology or a related field is a must with five years’ experience in pastoral ministry preferred. Active participant in the life of the Catholic Church and ability to participate in the full sacramental life of the church. Knowledge of Catholic sacramental theology including current Church teaching and issues related to RCIA, Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Marriage, Anointing and funeral rites. Skills in catechetics, public speaking, written communication and record keeping. Ability to facilitate large and small groups in prayer during liturgical celebrations. Ability to counsel and train individuals in Church Sacraments. Skill in interpersonal contact with the parish community. Must enjoy being around people and be comfortable in sharing aspects of their lives with them. Knowledge of the mission of the parishes and the Church and can enable others to live this mission in their own lives. An understanding of and ability to use collaborative management skills.

Salary commensurate with education and experience. Residence at one of the parishes is available and could be part of the compensation.
