Secretary for Catechetical Formation and Education/Superintendent

 

The Secretary for Catechetical Formation and Education/Superintendent provides leadership and strategic development, planning, management, and communication for Catholic education and catechesis in elementary schools, secondary schools, parishes, and campus ministry in the diocese. There are 185 parishes and 114 Catholic schools within the diocese. Under the direction of the Most Reverend Nelson Perez, Bishop of Cleveland, the Secretary/Superintendent serves as his delegate and consultant for Catholic formation of the diverse and talented students in our day schools and parish schools of religion. The Secretary serves parents and students in collaboration with clergy, religious, principals, directors of religious education, teachers, campus ministers, community leaders, and benefactors.

Minimum Qualifications

 

  1. Evidence of a strong commitment to the values, mission, ministry, and evangelization commission of the Catholic Church. Candidate must be a practicing Catholic with demonstrated knowledge of the Catholic Church, its teachings, and traditions.

 

  1. Advanced degree in the field of educational administration.
  1. At least ten years of work experience in Catholic educational ministry and leadership.                                 
  1. Knowledge of the Catholic faith through coursework or certification in catechetical formation.

 

  1. Certification in the field of education in compliance with standards set forth by State of Ohio, Department of Professional Development and Licensure.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  1. Advanced degree in the field of religious education or theological studies.

 

  1. Knowledge of current and emerging educational strategies and best practices for schools and religious education programs, especially as aligned with the Church’s philosophy of catechesis and Catholic education.

 

  1. Demonstrated professional and effective oral and written communication skills.

 

  1. Demonstrated effective inter-personal and relationship management skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of constituencies.

 

  1. Record of exemplary administrative and organizational leadership abilities especially in the areas of strategic planning, financial management, and leadership development.

Primary Responsibilities

 

  1. Provides the spiritual, organizational, fiscal, and administrative strategic leadership and direction necessary to lead and assist those who carry out various educational ministries within the diocese.

 

  1. Ensures that the principles and teachings of the Church and the norms and the directives of the Bishop are promulgated and honored as they relate to Catholic education.

 

  1. Formulates guidelines and training for those responsible for catechesis in parish school of religion programs and ongoing adult faith formation.

 

  1. Works collaboratively to develop and implement the goals and objectives of the Office of Catechetical Formation and Education.

 

  1. Provides consistent staff opportunities for relevant and significant professional development on topics including classroom instruction and instruction on Church teachings and directives.

 

  1. Develops collaborative involvement among parishes, districts, and diocesan-level offices and with various education agencies to promote evangelization, multicultural awareness, and an appropriate ecumenical spirit.

 

  1. Possesses a passionate commitment to people who are served in the diocese.

 

  1. Serves as media spokesperson representing the Bishop on educational matters.

 

  1. Demonstrates commitment to continued learning in areas impacting catechesis, Catholic education, and organizational management.

 

  1. Works collaboratively as a member of the Bishop’s staff and with all related groups.
